Earth Day heroMy cousin, Josh Fox, is a documentary film-maker and the only real hipster I know. I mean, this is the guy who lives in an old, un-renovated Brooklyn warehouse, drives an old car, and yet has an Oscar nomination for his anti-fracking piece, “Gasland”. A real gritty life he leads. Anyway, last night he premiered his latest documentary called “How to Let Go of the World: and Love all the Things Climate Can’t Change.” Happy stuff. So of course as his family, my mother demanded that we attend. I know I should have been excited, but I knew how depressing it would be, and I was NOT looking forward to it.

I got to the theater, found a seat next to the haughtiest do-gooders I had ever seen, and was ready for some good, old-fashioned preaching. By the time the movie was over, I was bawling my eyes out. I had so many emotions – anger at society and disgust at my materialistic lifestyle were two big ones. The most overarching feeling, though, was my wanting to DO SOMETHING. Make a change in the world. I just didn’t know how.

Why am I rambling on? Well, it’s Earth Day. Has there ever been a better time to help out the world? Didn’t think so.
